“늘 영님해라” — 고흥말 속에 남아 있는 마음의 언어
전남 고흥에서는 어른들이 길을 떠나는 자식에게 이런 말을 한다.
“아까 니한테 말한 거 늘 영님해라.”
이 말은 단순히 “기억해라”라는 뜻이 아니다.
마음에 새겨 두고 늘 생각하며 살아라는 깊은 당부가 담겨 있다.
고흥 방언 영님하다 / 영림하다는 다음과 같은 뜻으로 쓰인다.
- 따로 마음에 두고 늘 생각하다
- 잊지 말고 챙기다
- 마음에 깊이 새겨 두다 (명심하다)
특히 부모가 타향으로 떠나는 자식에게 하는 말로 자연스럽다.

비슷한 말로 **명념(銘念)**이 있다.

“Always Keep It in Your Heart” — A Word of Care Preserved in the Dialect of Goheung
In Goheung, Jeollanam-do, elders often say this to their children:
“What I told you earlier, always yeongnim it.”
(아까 니한테 말한 거 늘 영님해라.)
This expression does not simply mean “remember it.”
It carries a deeper meaning: keep it in your heart and live by it.
In the Goheung dialect, the expressions yeongnim-hada (영님하다) or yeongrim-hada (영림하다) mean:
- to keep something in one’s heart and think about it continually
- to remember carefully and not forget
- to engrave something in one’s mind
It is especially natural for parents to say this to a child who is leaving home for a distant place.
The Root of Yeongnim-hada
This dialect expression closely corresponds to the Sino-Korean term Yeongnyeom (另念).
The character 另 (yeong) means “separate” or “in a special way,”
while 念 (nyeom) means “to keep in mind” or “to think of.”
Thus 另念 literally means:
to keep someone or something specially in one’s thoughts.
Linguistically, the following transformation is possible:
Yeongnyeom (另念) → Yeongnim → Yeongrim
Such sound changes are common in the Jeolla dialect.
For example:
- yeom (염) → im (임)
- gyeom (겸) → gim (김)
- jeom (점) → jim (짐)
Through similar phonetic shifts, yeongnyeom could naturally become yeongnim or yeongrim in local speech.
